PHOENIX ROEBELENII

(Dwarf Date Palm, Pygmy Date Palm)

Very popular, elegant small palm from Laos, mostly with a solitary rough trunk to about 3 m high. Trunk is clothed with old leaf stalk remains. Attractive, arching, deep green fronds to around 1 m long with leaflets silvery beneath. Lower leaflets are reduced to sharp spines. Panicles of cream flowers are followed by small, egg-shaped, black, edible fruit. It requires protection from frost, is very suitable as a tub plant and can be used indoors.
